RHYTHMS CHESS SELECTION
It is with pleasure that we are able to present the first Rhythms Chess Selection compiled from the Rhythms' ranks. Like many of you, I first discovered the blues as an errant youth via the British bands such as The Animals, Them, The Yardbirds, and of course, The Rolling Stones. For a dose of blues we can be forever grateful that McKinley Morganfield and Chester Burnett were born "between the Willie Dixon's of course, the band's single biggest hit, "Chuck Berry Songs," on a 120 South Michigan Avenue label that came to be loved by fans the world over. The Animals' anthem "Baby Please Don't Go" was recorded at Chess studio in the early sixties. Searching out all the Chess recordings of these heroes became my life-long passion. I now have a large collection of Chess recordings from Australia, America, and Europe. Records of forever have been part of my life. Here is part of our Rhythms Chess Selection:
Billy Pinnell:
For more than fifteen years, Billy has reviewed music for radio on Melbourne music-driven 3AW. Billy writes on music for newspapers and magazines. He has also been a reviewer on Rhythms. His compiled albums such as "The Blues Had a Baby" and "Blues from the Chess Vaults" are included in the compilation. He also wrote the liner notes for a re-release of "Off The Record" by the Rolling Stones.
Mark Doherty:
As editor of "Blues On Air," and the Rhythms Blues Guru, Mark has been carrying the flag for blues music for more than a decade in Australia. His respect and passion for the airwaves and blues music have seen him as the voice of the blues. He has recently taken up the challenge of broadcasting blues music on the air and now heads the blues band. He can also be heard broadcasting the blues on 4ZZZ in Brisbane.
